San Francisco’s DJ Icon has long been a staple of the U.S. breaks and bass movement. She was one of the DJs that helped create San Francisco’s vibrant electronic music scene, she’s rocked dancefloors worldwide. She’s even starred on MTV and released on illeven 11. Her party rocking pedigree has been confirmed time and time again, and now she’s teaming up with longtime friend and Burning Man partner in crime, Deekline for an EP of massive proportions.
Starting things off with a little twerk action ‘Bring It Back’ sets the tone for this diverse EP. Rooted with a heavy 808 and minimal vibes, the tune has a garage inspired breakdown that quickly changes directions when the beat drops. The synths are sharp and when the bassline kicks in on the second drop, you know it’s time to throw them elbows.
‘Hey DJ’ takes a classic sample that everyone knows and gives a solid breakbeat update. While the track drops into some heavy territory it never looses the disco funk of the sample. And once again, they have given you a reason to stick around as the second drop includes a heavy dose of dirt in the bassline.
Finally ‘I Got Feelings’ rounds things out nicely with a soulful hook and more bassline fun to boot. We are looking forward to more releases from Icon in the future.
